Falasarna is a well-known beach situated 17 km from Kastelli Kissamos. The main beach, Pachia Ammos, stretches for one kilometer and is well-organized, featuring light-colored sand and turquoise waters. Another quieter beach, 800 meters long, can be found near the chapel of Saint Paraskevi and a nearby fountain. To the north, there are two additional beaches: Livadi, characterized by its rocky seabed, and a pebbly beach near the port.
This area is part of the Natura 2000 program due to its rare flora and fauna. In the northern section of the beach, you can find the remnants of the ancient Greco-Roman city-state of Falassarna, located at the current site of Koutri. This city-state had its own currency and was named after the mythological nymph Falassarna, serving as the port city for Polyrrenia. The port was fortified with walls and connected to the sea by a canal.
Falassarna is believed to have been destroyed by the Roman general Metellus due to the city’s resistance. Today, part of the ancient city is submerged underwater, while the ruins of the port lie on land, raised approximately 6 meters, likely as a result of the earthquake in 365 AD.
