Kalathas

Kalathas Beach, one of the most popular beaches in Chania, is situated in the heart of a natural bay on the western side of the Akrotiri peninsula. In recent years, the area around Kalathas has developed into a bustling community with permanent residences, holiday homes, hotels, and rental rooms. Its close proximity to the city of Chania makes Kalathas a lively holiday destination, especially during the summer months.

A distinctive feature of Kalathas Beach is the small rocky islet located just off the coast. This islet enhances the exotic and picturesque scenery and is easily swimmable for visitors. The beach itself boasts shallow blue waters and fine golden sand, making it an ideal spot for families. It is well-equipped with a variety of beach amenities and has been awarded the Blue Flag for its high standards of cleanliness and safety.

Adjacent to the main beach, to the east, lies a smaller, less developed beach. This area is less sandy and more serene, catering to those who prefer a quieter beach experience. Additionally, the small Kalathas Gorge, rich in flora and featuring underground springs that sustain various fauna species, ends at this beach. The gorge is also known for being one of the oldest climbing terrains in western Crete, accessible via a road branching off the main coastal motorway.
