Sarakiniko on Gavdos Island is located 1.5 kilometers from the port of Karave, easily reachable by bus or on foot. The beach is named after Saracen pirates who once used it as a base. Sarakiniko is the largest beach on Gavdos, featuring crystal-clear, shallow waters, sand dunes, and numerous cedar trees providing shade for free campers and swimmers during the summer.
For a more comfortable stay, there are rental rooms available, as well as taverns serving delicious food, mini markets for campers, and rental car services. The area has yielded ceramic sherds from the prehistoric era and stone tools. Additionally, remains of two Roman farmhouses with olive presses have been found, indicating the ancient cultivation of olives.
From 1929 to 1951, Gavdos was a place of political exile, including the famous figure Aris Velouchiotis. One of the houses where exiles lived, enduring many hardships, still stands in Sarakiniko. An inscription in the house commemorates this period.
