The Balos Lagoon, situated at the northwestern edge of Crete, is about 17 km from Kastelli Kissamos. This renowned beach is known for its exotic beauty and tends to be very crowded during the summer months. The sea forms a spacious lagoon nestled between the Gramvousa and Tigani peninsulas, connected to the rest of Crete by a slender strip of land. The beach features white sand, with areas tinged pink by crushed shells, and its shallow turquoise waters are ideal for wading, although the depth increases on the right side of the bay.
Balos is part of the Natura 2000 network, highlighting its ecological significance. The dunes host unique vegetation, including heather, thyme, gorse, sea daffodil, and the protected Centaurea nana. The Tigani peninsula also supports the growth of thistles.
Access to the beach is possible by car up to a certain point, followed by a hike along a path on Mount Geroskinos on the Gramvousa peninsula. This route offers stunning views and excellent photo opportunities. Alternatively, visitors can reach the beach by boat from Kastelli.
